Description
Mission Creek Preserve is a 4,760-acre preserve located in the transition zone between the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts, creating an unusually rich mix of desert plant and animal life. Visitors are often surprised to find lush wetlands at the center of the preserve, set against colorful eroded hills with Mount San Gorgonio rising in the background. These wetlands provide critical habitat for endangered birds such as the least Bell’s vireo and southwest willow flycatcher, while also attracting species like summer tanagers and vermilion flycatchers. The preserve is home to deer, bears, bighorn sheep, and mountain lions, and in wet years it bursts with spectacular spring wildflowers. Its trail system also connects to the renowned Pacific Crest Trail, located about two miles from the Stone House Group Campground.
